First Hospitality Group commits to redevelopment of former Hotel SeaGate
Once set to be demolished, Hotel SeaGate is now on its way to being restored. After shutting its doors in 2009, the hotel was left vacant. In 2017, Lucas County officials purchased the hotel and intended to tear it down. The initial interested developer recently backed out of the project leaving opportunity for another. First Hospitality Group, headquartered in Rosemont, IL, has stepped forward.
FHG completed a $31 million renovation in downtown Toledo and launched The Renaissance Downtown Hotel in August 2017. It is a four-diamond, full-service hotel with 241 rooms on the Maumee Riverfront. FHG operates 45 properties, 6700 rooms, and 18 different brands associated with Marriott International, Hilton Worldwide, Hyatt Global, and Intercontinental Hotels Group.
The yet-to-be-named hotel is located adjacent to the SeaGate Convention Centre and will have 200 rooms. The convention center is targeted for a major renovation including the addition of a ballroom. Across the street, Fort Industry Square will be redeveloped for mix-use of retail, entertainment, office and residential. The 125 year-old property has 89,000 square feet available and is owned by Karp and Associates who have also redeveloped Standart Lofts and The Berdan residential properties in downtown Toledo.
